Northwoods Retreat is surrounded by the Hiawatha National Forest, which encompasses almost 1 million acres of public land in which to explore and play. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is only 10 miles away, and offers over 40 miles of beautiful beaches, sandstone cliffs, and sand dunes. You can explore this park from the water on the Pictured Rocks Boat Tours, in your vehicle, or on foot on the many miles of hiking trails.

Munising also offers Grand Island National Recreational Area and the Alger Under Water Preserve for divers and boating enthusiast. The Under Water Preserve is a haven for SCUBA divers and snorkelers with dives from 10 feet below the surface to well over 100 feet. You can also see the under water shipwrecks and the beautiful scenery around Grand Island on the narrated Glass Bottom Boat Tour. The Seney Wildlife Refuge is only a short drive away. Enjoy a peaceful drive through the refuge and observe some of the splendor it has to offer. Alger County has some of the most fantastic waterfalls in the country with both primitive and modern accessible locations. With the hundreds of lakes, streams, and rivers in the area, Alger county also is an ideal location for charter and lake fishing.

For poker players and slot machine jockeys, the Kewadin Casino is less than 5 miles away.

Alger County receives 200" of snowfall per year on average, which makes it the perfect area for winter sports. Snowmobilers, cross country skiers, ice climbers, snowshoers, and ice fishermen – Alger County awaits you! If you’re tired of the cramped recreational opportunities in your area, come stay with us at Northwoods Retreat, and gain access to the million+ acres of public land with more than 200 lakes, rivers, and streams, and enjoy your “Northwoods” vacation experience!
